Swedish for everyday life

This course is designed for employees who want to strengthen their Swedish language skills and gain a better understanding of Swedish society. Through practical examples and real-life situations, you will develop the confidence to communicate with colleagues, public authorities, healthcare providers, schools, and other important community services.

Being able to communicate in Swedish makes everyday life and work in Sweden easier. This course helps you develop your Swedish language skills and gain a better understanding of how Swedish society works.

You will practice situations that many people encounter in everyday life, such as contact with public authorities, healthcare services, schools, and other important community functions. The course will also help you feel more confident when communicating with colleagues and other workplace contacts.

The course is fully online and self-paced. You can study when it suits you and immediately apply what you learn in everyday life and at work.

Structure

The course is delivered entirely online and is designed to fit alongside work commitments. You study at your own pace and complete the modules in sequence. Course content can be revisited whenever needed.

• Interactive exercises for practising vocabulary, phrases, and common situations
• Knowledge checks
• Word lists, phrase guides, and practical quick-reference guides with useful expressions for everyday life and work
• Grammar exercises and short grammar guides

Pedagogical approach
Each module includes video instructions, written materials, and practical exercises. The course combines everyday Swedish with basic grammar and topics related to Swedish society.

Participants who complete all course components will receive a course certificate.

Course Content

Module 1: Swedish in Everyday Life
Introduction to the Swedish language and common everyday situations. You will practise greetings, introducing yourself, talking about who you are, and communicating in simple everyday situations.

Module 2: Basic Swedish Grammar
Introduction to fundamental Swedish grammar. You will work with core grammatical structures and build a foundation for understanding and creating simple sentences in Swedish.

Module 3: Leisure Time
Swedish for leisure and social situations. You will practise talking about your interests, hobbies, and social activities.

Module 4: In the Workplace
Practical Swedish for working life. You will learn common workplace vocabulary and expressions, communicate with colleagues, and understand simple instructions and work-related information.

Module 5: Healthcare
Swedish for interacting with healthcare services. You will learn common words and phrases used to describe symptoms, book appointments, ask questions, and understand basic information.

Module 6: At School
Swedish in school-related situations. You will practise words and expressions useful when communicating with schools, teachers, and other parents.

Module 7: Intermediate Swedish Grammar
Further development of Swedish grammar. Topics include conjunctions, object pronouns, the present perfect tense, subordinate clauses, question words, and Swedish sentence structure.

Module 8: Gender Equality and Democracy in Sweden
Learn more about gender equality and democracy in Sweden. You will become familiar with important concepts and gain a greater understanding of laws and regulations that are part of Swedish society.

Module 9: Culture in Sweden
Swedish culture, traditions, and social contexts. You will learn words and expressions that help you understand and participate in cultural and social situations.

Module 10: Practical Swedish Grammar
Deepen your understanding of Swedish grammar and how the language is used in practice. You will continue working with adjectives and pronouns and learn about particle verbs, deponent verbs, and passive forms.

Module 11: The Green Transition
Swedish with a focus on the green industrial transition. You will learn relevant vocabulary and expressions related to sustainability, environmental issues, and industrial transformation.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, participants will have practical and useful Swedish language skills connected to everyday life, working life, and Swedish society. Participants will be able to:

• Introduce themselves and talk about their daily lives in simple Swedish
• Communicate in common everyday situations
• Use Swedish words and expressions relevant to the workplace
• Understand and use basic Swedish grammar
• Communicate more easily with colleagues and people around them
• Understand basic information related to healthcare and schools
• Use relevant vocabulary related to democracy, gender equality, and Swedish culture
• Understand and use basic terms and expressions connected to the green transition
• Feel more confident using Swedish in everyday life and at work

To receive a course certificate, all modules and the final course component must be completed.

Course Development

The course is developed by Adult Education in Luleå Municipality within the RUFFS project. The content and pedagogical approach are quality assured by teachers with experience in teaching Swedish as a second language.
